【Recap of the Previous Lesson】
One of the behaviors of people who don’t really want to become wealthy is that, in the end, they follow the advice of people around them who are not financially successful.
Many people say they want to become wealthy, yet they prioritize the opinions of their parents, spouses, or bosses. As a result, they give up on taking actions such as investing or starting a business.
If the people giving you advice are not wealthy themselves, their guidance is unlikely to lead you toward wealth.
That said, this isn’t a matter of right or wrong. It’s simply a matter of which set of values feels most comfortable to you.
If you’ve grown up surrounded by people who believe, “You can be happy without money,” then it’s perfectly natural to choose that way of life.
However, it’s important to understand one reality:
If you follow the standards of people who are not wealthy, your chances of becoming wealthy become much lower.
【Five Behaviors of People Who Don’t Want to Become Wealthy (Continued)】
▶No. 5: They Don’t Practice Gratitude
~A Common Belief Among Ungrateful People~
People who fail to appreciate what they have often share one underlying belief:
“I deserve more!”
They believe they deserve a better life simply because they exist.
They think:
- Store employees should provide them with perfect customer service.
- Their company should pay them a much higher salary.
- The government should charge lower taxes while providing even better public services.
- Their pension should pay them far more than what they’ve contributed.
- Their spouse should be more devoted and give them more support.
Whether or not they contribute anything themselves is almost beside the point.
They simply believe the world owes them more.
~Now Put Yourself on the Other Side~
Try looking at it from the opposite perspective.
Suppose someone constantly says,
“I deserve more.”
Would you willingly give your money to someone with that attitude?
When judging other people, we can often think clearly.
But when judging ourselves, our blind spots appear.
That’s simply part of being human.
I constantly remind myself to be careful about this as well.
~People Who Become Wealthy Are Grateful People~
People who become wealthy are people who know how to be grateful.
I’ve said this many times:
Japan is an incredibly fortunate country.
- Crime rates are low.
- Disaster preparedness is strong.
- Infrastructure is highly developed.
- Medical care and education are widely available.
Of course, Japan also has its challenges.
But I want to continue emphasizing this point:
These two statements are both true at the same time.
- We are fortunate today.
- There are still problems that need to be solved.
Japan is blessed.
And Japan still has challenges.
Most importantly,
it’s our responsibility—not someone else’s—to help solve those problems.
~Gratitude and Criticism Can Coexist~
When I say we’re fortunate,
some people respond,
“So you’re saying we shouldn’t criticize the government?”
Not at all.
These two ideas can exist together perfectly:
- Be grateful for what you already have.
- Don’t leave every problem for someone else to solve—do what you can yourself.
There is no contradiction between gratitude and constructive criticism.
~Gratitude Creates the Energy to Take Action~
Gratitude generates a powerful desire to contribute.
It makes you think,
“I want to do something to help make the world a better place.”
Why?
Because you don’t want to keep receiving without giving back.
When you’ve been supported during difficult times—
by your family,
by your friends,
you naturally want to repay their kindness.
That feeling itself comes from gratitude.
Expand that perspective beyond the people closest to you and toward society as a whole,
and you’ll begin to notice business opportunities.
Money flows to those who solve other people’s problems.
That’s how wealthy people think.
They believe:
“The world has an unlimited number of problems and challenges.
Therefore, there are unlimited opportunities to create value—and earn money.”
~Simply Saying “I’m Grateful” Isn’t Enough~
Gratitude isn’t something that exists only in words.
People who lack gratitude often believe:
“Receiving is only natural.”
“I deserve even more.”
As a result,
they rarely think,
“What can I do for someone else?”
Simply saying,
“I’m grateful,”
doesn’t necessarily mean you truly are.
A common example is someone who says,
“I say thank you all the time, so of course I’m grateful.”
But genuine gratitude is demonstrated differently.
It’s shown by people who ask themselves,
“What can I do right now?”
—and then take action.
Personally,
I pay much more attention to people’s actions than to their words.
I try to do the same in my own life:
Show gratitude through action, not just through speech.
~The Outcome of Failing to Practice Gratitude~
People who don’t genuinely appreciate others tend to follow this pattern:
They don’t give back to others.
↓
Others don’t appreciate or support them.
↓
As a result, money doesn’t naturally flow toward them.
That is the mindset of someone who, deep down,
doesn’t truly want to become wealthy.
