【Recap of the Previous Article】
A survey of 4,295 people found that the two factors with the greatest impact on happiness are health and financial security. Health was considered important by 77% of respondents, while 70% prioritized their household finances—both ranking higher than work or personal relationships.
The survey also revealed that people who describe themselves as happy tend to have fewer financial worries, while those who feel unhappy are much more likely to be concerned about their finances. The key is not simply earning a higher income, but reducing financial anxiety. To achieve that, we need to strengthen both our ability to save and our ability to use money wisely, while building assets and investing in our health.
Protecting both your finances and your health is the foundation of long-term happiness.
【At What Income Does Happiness Stop Increasing?~How to Secure a “Future Victory”~】
~Does Happiness Plateau at an Annual Income of ¥4.5 Million?~
~What the Data Tells Us About “Enough”~
Now that we’ve seen that health and money are the two biggest contributors to happiness, the next question naturally becomes:
“So, how much income is actually enough?”
(Source: https://ouc.daishodai.ac.jp/graduate/teacher/economic/shishido_kuniaki.html)
According to Professor Kuniaki Shishido of Osaka University of Commerce, who analyzed the survey, the effect of income on happiness becomes much smaller once annual income exceeds ¥4.5 million.
Many people might think,
“That’s lower than I expected.”
Research conducted in the United States has reached a similar conclusion. It suggests that once annual income exceeds approximately US$75,000, additional income has little effect on overall happiness.
Since that figure is calculated per person, a two-person household would need roughly US$150,000 in annual household income to reach the same level.
Personally, I find this figure more intuitive.
~The Point Where “More Money = More Happiness” Begins to Break Down~
The difference between earning ¥3 million and ¥4 million a year has a major impact on daily life.
However, the difference between ¥8 million and ¥9 million is much harder to notice.
I know someone who now earns around ¥700,000 per month. According to him, even after his income continued to rise, his overall satisfaction with life hardly changed.
That seems to fit the data quite well.
The first extra ¥50,000 or ¥100,000 of income can dramatically improve your life.
But once you pass a certain threshold, each additional increase tends to feel smaller and smaller.
~Why ¥4.5 Million Makes Sense for Retirees—and How You Can Aim for ¥4.8 Million~
That said, it’s important to remember that this survey focused mainly on older adults.
For retirees, an annual income of ¥4.5 million can be considered a comfortable level.
In fact, about 90% of seniors earn less than ¥5 million per year, making ¥4.5 million relatively high within that group.
Unlike younger generations, retirees have generally finished paying for major life events such as marriage, buying a home, and raising children.
The average public pension for a model household is around ¥2.4 million per year.
An annual income of ¥4.5 million is almost double that amount.
That may well represent a level where people can live comfortably without major financial stress.
Now I’d like you to imagine your own future.
I hope you’ll begin to see what I call a “future victory that is almost guaranteed.”
Suppose you receive ¥2.4 million per year from the public pension.
Then imagine earning:
- ¥100,000 per month doing work you genuinely enjoy (earning power), and
- ¥100,000 per month from dividends or withdrawals from index investments (investment power).
That would give you a total annual income of approximately ¥4.8 million.
Of course, everyone’s situation is different.
But statistically speaking, you’ve already reached the level where additional income has little impact on happiness.
~Grow Your “Money Tree,” and Your Future Looks Bright~
Generating ¥100,000 per month in investment income generally requires financial assets of roughly ¥30 million.
Think of it as growing your own “money tree.”
An asset base of this size places you roughly among the top 10% of households.
Whether viewed from the perspective of cash flow or net assets, it represents a financially comfortable position.
If you start developing both your earning power and your investment power today, you’ll not only improve your current lifestyle—you’ll also enjoy greater financial freedom in retirement.
For people who are willing to take action, I truly believe this is an age full of opportunity.
The future is bright for those who act.
Personally, I think we live in a remarkably good era.
For those who choose to take action, the opportunities have never been greater.
