【Recap of the Previous Story】
The “shipwreck story” represents modern ways of working and risk management.
Just as many companies were severely affected during the COVID-19 pandemic, a company is not always guaranteed to remain stable.
Salary cuts and layoffs can be compared to a situation where a ship is being repaired. At the same time, outside the company, there are opportunities to create additional income streams, such as side businesses and investments.
However, people who quit their jobs and start their own businesses purely on impulse may find themselves struggling when their environment changes.
On the other hand, relying only on a company is not necessarily safe either.
Even if a company survives, that does not always mean it can protect every individual employee.
What truly matters is building additional sources of income and managing assets while still having the stability of a regular job.
In other words, the key is not to avoid risk completely, but to learn how to control and manage risk properly.
【Avoiding Risk Forever Does Not Lead to Security — It May Lead to Losing Opportunities】
~Avoiding risk does not always lead to safety.~
Now, I want to add one final thought.
In this story, there were three choices, right?
- Become Passenger A (take no risk)
- Become Passenger B (take an appropriate amount of risk)
- Become Passenger C (take excessive risk)
But I would like you to consider another perspective as well.
This is, after all, just a simple story.
So I welcome any deeper discussion or criticism.
For example, what about a fourth option?
Passenger D.
Here is one possible way of thinking.
Imagine becoming Passenger D and negotiating with the workers repairing the ship.
You could say:
“I will bring back fruit for all of you.
So even if I don’t return immediately, please wait for me a little longer.”
By making this agreement,
you can enjoy as much fruit as you want,
while also reducing the risk of being left behind.
This could also be considered one form of taking an appropriate risk.
~What Would I Do Personally?~
Now, what would I choose?
In the real world, I would become Passenger C — the person who takes risks.
Of course, in the original story, where your life is literally at stake, I would not choose Passenger C.
I would probably choose Passenger B.
But the real world is different.
In reality, I would take the risk and choose Passenger C.
In other words:
I would choose entrepreneurship and independence.
Why?
Because in the real world, becoming independent means gaining more control over your time.
With that extra time,
you may discover new sources of opportunity,
you may create your own fields to grow resources,
and you may even be able to build your own ship using materials available on the island.
And even if things do not work out,
there is still a possibility that another ship passing by could rescue you.
If that is not enough, social support systems exist to help people survive.
And you can always try again.
The reason is simple:
I believe the potential return is greater than the risk.
~The Real World Is Much Kinder Than This Story~
When you look at it this way,
you realize that the real world has much more forgiving conditions than this simple story.
Everyone’s situation is different.
And the ways we take risks, as well as the balance between safety and challenge, are virtually unlimited.
That is exactly why I want you to think for yourself.
Ask yourself:
- If I were in this situation, would I choose A, B, or C?
- Or was there actually another option that I had not considered?
I want you to think deeply about these questions.
Being able to think about things that have no single correct answer — and discuss them from different perspectives — is extremely important.
~What Really Matters Is Not Whether You Take Risks, But How You Take Them~
The most important thing is not whether you take risks or avoid them.
The important question is:
How do you take risks?
Through this story,
I hope you understand that point.
By learning from childhood how to take appropriate risks,
people develop the ability to make better decisions.
Perhaps this is one reason why many successful entrepreneurs and innovators have developed strong decision-making skills from an early age.
