【A Recap of the Previous Article】

“The Sparrow Wearing a Golden Crown” is a Talmudic parable that teaches us about the foolishness of spending money simply to impress others.

One day, a flock of sparrows rescued King Solomon when he became ill and was about to fall from an eagle.

In gratitude, the king told them, “I will give you whatever you wish.”

The sparrows began thinking about things they really needed: a safe vineyard where they would be protected, a pond with plenty of water, and open fields where they would never have to worry about finding food.

But in the end, they decided that what they really wanted was a golden crown just like King Solomon’s.

King Solomon warned them, saying, “I don’t think that is a very good idea.”

But the sparrows insisted on having their wish granted.

The lesson of this story is that if we prioritize looking good in the eyes of others over the things we genuinely need in life, we may end up sacrificing our future security and prosperity.

Whenever we buy something, it is important to ask ourselves:

“Do I really need this?”

and

“How much am I actually paying just to impress other people?”

【The Story of “The Sparrow Wearing a Golden Crown” — Continued】

The sparrows were overjoyed when King Solomon gave them their golden crowns, and they proudly flew high through the sky.

Until then, hunters had never paid any attention to sparrows.

But because the sparrows were now wearing golden crowns, they began to be hunted all across the kingdom.

Most of their companions were shot down, and eventually, only five sparrows remained in Israel.

The last five sparrows barely made it to King Solomon alive and said:

“We were wrong. We don’t want the golden crowns anymore.”

The golden crowns were removed from the sparrows, and little by little, the sparrows regained their peaceful lives.

Within a few years, their population had returned to its former size.

And they all lived happily ever after…?

That is how the story ends.

~The Fundamental Lesson of This Story~

So, what is this story really trying to tell us?

It teaches us one fundamental principle:

“If you flaunt your wealth, you may ultimately destroy yourself.”

Throughout history, in every part of the world,

countless people have fallen into this trap

and eventually lost everything.

And they all have one thing in common:

They don’t realize that they are falling into the trap.

  • They don’t realize that “showing off your wealth makes you a target.”
  • They don’t realize that they are just sparrows — in other words, that they are vulnerable.

And as a result,

they end up being targeted by people who are stronger than they are:

the hunters.

And they eventually lose the wealth they worked so hard to acquire.

【Three Key Points Behind the Principle: “Flaunting Your Wealth Can Destroy You”】

Point 1: Wealth that you show off to others can become a target for others.

For example, imagine a business owner who has achieved a certain level of success.

They might:

  • Spend lavishly at hostess clubs, waving around cash and black credit cards.
  • Cover themselves in designer brands and go shopping for a luxury home.
  • Start driving around in a Ferrari or Lamborghini.

There are many people who, after becoming successful, begin to show off their wealth in this way.

By behaving as if they are saying,

“I’m a successful person! I’ve got money!”

they gradually become a “VIP customer” at all kinds of establishments.

And once they become a “VIP customer,”

they really do receive wonderfully attentive service.

They are treated as if they are extremely important,

and before long,

they start to feel as though they have become someone important.
