【A Quick Recap of the Previous Article】
The sparrows were rewarded for helping King Solomon. They had done nothing wrong. However, their request for a golden crown for every sparrow was inappropriate and disproportionate to their abilities and way of life.
What would have truly benefited the sparrows were rewards that improved their quality of life, such as a vineyard where they could hide and a pond where they could drink water. Even if they kept their golden crowns hidden away, the crowns would do nothing to protect them. Instead, wearing them would risk attracting the attention of larger birds and hunters.
In other words, when choosing a reward, we should not focus on appearances or short-term gains. We should choose something that suits our abilities, lifestyle, and safety.
This lesson also applies to investing.
For example, if your investment of ¥1 million grows to ¥10 million in just one year, you need to ask yourself whether that profit reflects your own judgment and ability, or whether it is an excessive gain driven by luck or a market bubble.
Money beyond your level of experience or ability can bring misfortune and unnecessary risks if you fail to handle it with the proper awareness and caution.
【Conclusion: Build Your Wealth by Accumulating Reasonable Profits】
Today, I introduced you to the story of The Sparrow Wearing a Golden Crown, a tale from the Talmud, a book that can be regarded as a compass for life in Jewish tradition.
Here is a quick recap:
- The sparrows helped King Solomon when he was about to fall from an eagle’s back.
- As their reward, they asked for golden crowns.
- Wearing their golden crowns, the sparrows became targets for hunters and were nearly wiped out.
- Eventually, the sparrows abandoned their golden crowns.
That is the story.
Its message is simple:
Showing off your wealth can lead to your own downfall.
This is a timeless truth that can be found across cultures and throughout history.
There are three key lessons to take away from this story.
(1) When You Show Off Your Wealth, You Become a Target
Bragging about how wealthy you are is practically the same as saying:
“I’m a target! Come and get me!”
Well, unless you’re someone who enjoys that sort of attention.
After all, if you’re practically shouting, “Come after me!”, you shouldn’t be surprised when people actually do.
Imagine wearing a golden crown on your head and then asking a hunter:
“Why are you targeting me?!”
It makes absolutely no sense, does it?
(2) Most of Us Are Sparrows
An annual income of ¥10 million.
Assets worth ¥100 million.
In a capitalist society, only a minority of people have the ability to earn or accumulate that much money.
However, that doesn’t mean they are eagles, the kings of the sky.
At best, they’re probably just sparrows with bigger bodies.
The reality is that most of us, myself included, are sparrows.
Once you recognize that fact, you’re less likely to do foolish things.
(3) Seek Reasonable Profits
Even if you acquire something through hard work, if the reward is disproportionate or inappropriate, you may eventually face a painful backlash.
Whenever you receive a reward, always ask yourself:
- Is this something appropriate for me?
- Is this reward proportionate to what I have actually done?
Make sure you ask yourself these questions.
Those are the three key lessons.
~The Golden Crown Is Invisible~
From what I can see, sparrows wearing golden crowns are flying around everywhere.
They don’t realize that showing off their wealth makes them targets.
They also fail to recognize that they are merely sparrows—and therefore vulnerable.
Perhaps you, too, sometimes see a sparrow wearing a golden crown and find yourself feeling envious.
You might even think:
“I have to wear a golden crown, just like all the other sparrows!”
But let me be clear:
You must never fall into that trap.
Instead, just look at those sparrows and think:
“Hmm… I wonder when that one will get shot down.”
And leave it at that.
Let’s build our wealth by accumulating reasonable profits:
- Safely.
- Without attracting unnecessary attention.
- Little by little.
Today is the youngest you’ll ever be again.
~Three Questions to Revisit Regularly~
Even when people understand the principles discussed today intellectually, many still fall right into the trap when it comes to their own lives.
The scary thing about the golden crown is that you can’t see it—and you may not even realize you’re wearing one.
That’s why it’s worth revisiting these three questions regularly:
- Am I showing off my golden crown?
- Have I forgotten that I’m a sparrow?
- Are the rewards I’m receiving proportionate to my actions?
Countless people have fallen into this trap, only to be shot down by hunters and disappear.
You don’t need to wear a golden crown.
You don’t need to make other people envy you.
You can become wealthy and still live a happy life.
I’d also like to add one thing:
Even eagles have their own struggles.
The point isn’t to limit yourself or settle for less than you want.
It’s about pursuing happiness on your own terms.
Let’s continue learning and taking action as we work toward our own happiness!
