【Recap from the previous section】

It’s not uncommon for people to say they “want to become rich,” while unconsciously taking actions that move them in the opposite direction.

Human desires on the surface and actual behavior often don’t align. If someone notices inconsistency in their actions, it may indicate that, deep down, they are not truly aiming for wealth.

Of course, not everyone is required to pursue financial abundance. However, if someone genuinely wants it, then reviewing their thinking patterns and behavior becomes essential. One example of this is “kemu-jo” (anti-wealth sentiment), a mindset that rejects the act of earning money itself.

Money, however, is a neutral tool that carries no inherent moral value. What matters is the attitude of the person who uses it. Rather than avoiding money itself, the focus should be on how it is earned and how it is used.

【Five behaviors of people who do not become wealthy (continued)】

▶2. They avoid taking risks

Are you misunderstanding what “risk” actually means?

First, let’s establish a basic principle—call it whatever you like:

  • an economic law
  • a universal principle
  • a structural truth

The key point is simple:

Risk and return are two sides of the same coin.

Many people misunderstand the word “risk.”

Risk does not mean “danger.”

When people hear “risk exists,” they often react with:
“That’s dangerous!”

But that interpretation is incorrect.

Risk = uncertainty about future outcomes.

That is all it means.

If you equate risk with danger, that understanding needs to be corrected immediately.

It simply refers to the range of possible outcomes—positive or negative. It is neither good nor bad. It is neutral.

~Is “being a salaried worker is also risky” really true?~

When discussing the challenges of salaried employment, some people respond:

“Staying a company employee is also risky, isn’t it?”

At first glance, this sounds reasonable, but it is not entirely accurate.

Japan’s labor system is strongly protected by law, and employment structures are relatively predictable.

Even when considering:

  • salary reductions
  • bonus cuts
  • employment instability

the legal framework remains robust.

For example, lifetime earnings for male university graduates are estimated to cluster around:

  • approximately 200–250 million yen (JPY)

This is not an exact figure for every individual, but statistically, it tends to fall within a relatively stable range.

Even with fluctuations such as pay cuts or reduced bonuses, these changes are largely “visible adjustments” within an existing structure.

In other words:

  • earnings are relatively predictable
  • extreme upside and downside are both limited

From the perspective of economic uncertainty, the level of risk is relatively low.

So in terms of income stability, remaining a salaried worker is not a high-risk option.

Uncertainty is limited, and expected lifetime earnings can be roughly estimated.

If no major risk is taken, lifetime income will generally stay within that expected range.

In many cases, your future self will resemble your current supervisor in terms of career trajectory and income structure.

There is not much variation.

~What should be avoided is not “risk,” but “danger”~

This is the core point.

The situation where I would strongly recommend leaving a job is not when “risk” exists, but when danger exists.

For example:

  • environments that steadily damage mental health
  • work that harms physical health
  • situations with a high probability of accidents or serious trouble

These are not “risk” in the sense of uncertainty.

They are literal danger.

Danger should be avoided. Risk does not necessarily need to be avoided.

Occupations such as:

  • military personnel
  • firefighters
  • police officers

are structured around inherent danger, and their compensation systems reflect that.

However, in typical salaried employment, hazard compensation is not structurally embedded into wages.

There is no automatic “promotion for sacrifice” system either.

~If you truly want to become wealthy, there is an unavoidable condition~

You must place yourself in a domain where outcomes are uncertain.

That is the only prerequisite.

Risk, like money, is a neutral concept.

The outcome may be positive or negative. There is no inherent moral judgment in that uncertainty.

If someone says, “I want to become rich,” then by definition, they must accept:

betting on uncertainty that wealth may increase.

This is self-evident.

However, many people avoid financial uncertainty while simultaneously enduring mental or physical strain in their jobs.

They choose a path with minimal financial volatility:

  • they will not become poor
  • but they will not become significantly wealthy either

In the end, they choose the lowest-variance path.

It is safe, but it also limits growth potential.

What I find interesting is this:

Even when people accept mental and physical burdens, they often still try to avoid financial uncertainty.

They endure danger in one form, while strictly avoiding uncertainty in another.

~Why most people return to “safe stability”~

Many people seek advice.

But in the end, most return to their original choices.

At that point, it is difficult to avoid the impression that they may not truly want to become wealthy in the first place.

Meanwhile, those who actually achieve different outcomes consistently take different actions.

If you repeat the same actions, you will get the same results.

That is simply how it works.

Personally, I avoid danger, but I enjoy taking risks.

Because different actions lead to different outcomes.

Move forward without letting fear decide everything.
