【A Recap of the Previous Article】
The third key point of the story of “the seven fat cows and the seven lean cows” is a practical question:
What exactly should we save, and how much?
In the Bible, Joseph advised Pharaoh to store up as much as possible in preparation for the coming famine.
However, if we apply this literally to modern household finances, we could end up with an extreme conclusion:
“Save your entire ¥1 million bonus and never enjoy your life today.”
That would be more like the life of an ascetic monk. Preparing for the future while sacrificing your entire present life would completely miss the point.
Unlike the days when famines caused millions of deaths, modern Japan has well-developed infrastructure and medical care, and widespread starvation has largely become a thing of the past.
As FACTFULNESS points out, the world has steadily become more prosperous.
And that is precisely what makes this question difficult.
We need to recognize that our income will not continue forever, while at the same time maintaining our current quality of life (QOL).
So how much should we actually prepare for the future?
The challenge is finding a balance that is neither extreme frugality nor reckless spending.
That is a uniquely modern financial challenge.
【Three Ideas from the Story of the Seven Fat Cows and the Seven Lean Cows — Continued】
Everyone has their own way of thinking about money.
But as a few hints from me,
I’d like to introduce three ideas.
~Idea 1: Save aggressively until you achieve financial freedom~
As one possible guideline, you could continue saving as aggressively as possible until you reach one of these milestones:
i) Your income from dividends, interest, and rent exceeds your living expenses.
ii) You have accumulated enough money to cover 25 years of living expenses.
In other words, you could adopt a lifestyle where you save
70–90% of your take-home income.
Why go that far?
Because once you achieve financial freedom, the arrival of the lean cows — meaning the loss of your active income — is no longer necessarily a problem.
That’s because you have multiple sources of income.
Of course, once you reach that point, you may start worrying about something else:
What if your investment income doesn’t last forever?
There are plenty of things to worry about!
But that’s a topic for another time.
~Idea 2: Keep saving a certain percentage of your income~
First, let’s consider people who are currently experiencing their own “lean cow” period:
employees, business owners, and freelancers.
For example:
- You have been laid off and are currently unemployed.
- Your salary or bonuses have been cut because of poor business performance.
- Your sales have dropped dramatically because you lost a major client.
If that’s your situation,
your first priority should be to rebuild your financial foundation.
You should put your full effort into getting your life back on track.
But if you are not in that situation,
it can be a good idea to simply decide:
“I will save a certain percentage of my income.”
~Why is deciding on a percentage easier?~
The more your income increases,
the more money you can spend on improving your quality of life.
At the same time,
the amount of money you can put toward savings also increases.
That makes it easier to maintain a balance between your finances and your QOL.
For example:
“I’ll save 20% of my income every month.”
Once you decide on a percentage,
it becomes surprisingly easy.
As your income rises,
you can increase both your savings
and the amount of money you have available to enjoy your life.

In The Richest Man in Babylon,
the advice is to save 10% of your income.
Simply continuing to follow that rule
can also be a good idea.
~Idea 3: Spend a certain percentage of your income on people and skills~
The things you need to survive a period of lean cows
are not necessarily limited to
grain stored in your own warehouse = financial capital.
For example:
- Social capital — family and friends who can support one another
- Human capital — skills that allow you to earn money outside your main occupation
These can also serve as forms of preparation for the future.
This is where your ability to spend money wisely is put to the test.
During a period of prosperity,
you can strengthen your relationships with family and friends,
while also investing money in yourself
and developing skills in new fields.
In this way,
the money you spend today can potentially become part of your preparation for the future.
So allocating 10% of your income to social activities and self-investment
could also be a good approach.
【One Harsh Reality I Should Add】
Finally, there is one important point I need to mention.
For those who are thinking,
“Well, I’m in the middle of my lean-cow period right now…”
I have to tell you about a rather harsh reality.
According to a traditional Jewish/Talmudic way of thinking,
a period of prosperity is followed by a period of hardship.
But there is no guarantee that prosperity will always follow hardship.
That’s a pretty harsh idea, isn’t it?
You cannot simply expect:
“If I endure the bad times, everything will eventually work out!”
Apparently, this is not the kind of assumption one should rely on.
In other words,
sometimes you have no choice but to move the lean cows yourself.
【What Can Become a Breakthrough?】
So what can help you break through a difficult situation?
Two things are particularly important:
- The principle of “no pain, no gain” — success requires sacrifice.
- The courage to take an appropriate level of risk.
Be prepared to make sacrifices.
Accept an appropriate level of risk.
And then,
have the courage to take action.
That action
may eventually lead you to a future
where the fat cows return.
That is the final point I wanted to add.
