【A Quick Recap of the Previous Article】
The author argues that if you’re planning to become self-employed or start a business, one of the first things you should do is open a dedicated bank account for your business.
Even if you’re starting small with a side hustle or real estate investment, mixing your personal and business finances can make it difficult to track income and expenses and file your tax returns.
The author recommends building a relationship with a local credit union or cooperative financial institution (shinkin bank).
For business owners, cash flow is like physical stamina. Once you run out of money, you can no longer keep your business going.
Large banks may be willing to lend when your business is performing well. However, when times get tough, they may tighten their lending policies or step up efforts to recover outstanding loans.
By contrast, the author argues that a community-based financial institution, such as a shinkin bank, is more likely to take a personal interest in your situation and offer advice tailored to your needs.
The author also emphasizes that this is something you should understand even while you’re still employed, so you can prepare for future self-employment or a career change.
【Japan’s Major Banks Won’t Give You the Business Advice You Need】
First of all, do you know what types of banks there are in Japan?
One type of bank that almost everyone knows is a megabank.
- Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC)
- MUFG Bank
- Mizuho Bank
Many people probably have accounts with one or more of these three banks.
Almost everyone has heard of them.
They have branches all over Japan and an extensive network of ATMs.
〜Megabanks Focus on Large Corporations〜
However, when you strike out on your own as a freelancer or start your own company, megabanks are highly unlikely to offer business advice or provide financing for your business.
Why?
Because megabanks primarily serve large corporations.
They deal with businesses involving billions or even tens of billions of yen. As a result, they generally have little interest in small businesses, such as:
- Sole proprietorships
- Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
You are unlikely to receive financing for starting a business or covering your day-to-day operating expenses.
In fact, even opening a corporate bank account can be difficult for a newly established company.
You probably won’t receive a business loan, and you shouldn’t expect a bank representative to sit down with you and discuss your business plans.
〜Your Savings History Won’t Count for Much〜
Let’s say you receive your salary into an account at a megabank.
Even if you have been steadily saving money in that account every month, that track record is unlikely to work in your favor when you seek business financing.
The bank isn’t going to think:
“This person has been saving money consistently for years. That deserves some recognition!”
That simply isn’t how it works.
Whether you’re going independent or getting started in real estate investment, you shouldn’t expect a megabank to support you in the early stages.
〜Megabanks Aren’t the Best Choice for Your Business Banking Needs〜
For these reasons, a megabank is generally not the best banking partner for a small business just getting started.
Of course, megabanks are convenient. You can use them for automatic bill payments and other everyday banking needs.
But that’s one thing. Getting support for your business is another.
That’s the key characteristic of megabanks.
【Regional Banks Know Their Communities, but Approach Them After Your Business Has Grown】
So, what about regional banks instead of megabanks?
Regional banks include institutions such as:
- Chiba Bank
- Shizuoka Bank
- Bank of Kyoto
- Hiroshima Bank
These are banks headquartered in a particular prefecture and primarily serving businesses and individuals in that region.
Some also expand into other prefectures by opening branches outside their home regions.
〜Still a Step Above for Those Just Starting Out〜
In reality, regional banks can also be a little out of reach for freelancers and small businesses that are just getting started.
Of course, they are generally more accessible than megabanks.
Even so, unless you’re a freelancer with substantial personal assets or an established SME with a strong financial track record, you may find yourself turned away at the door.
Getting the financing you want is far from guaranteed.
If you’re a freelancer just starting out, it’s better to approach a regional bank after your business has grown a little further.
