Today’s Topic: An Overview

Vanity can be the root of poverty!

Today, I’m going to tell you the story of

“The Sparrow Wearing a Golden Crown.”

【The More You Try to Impress Others, the More Money Slips Away — How Much Did You Pay for That Vanity?】

From the Jewish scriptures, the Talmud,

I have previously shared three stories:

211 The Talmud: “The Seven Fat Cows and the Seven Thin Cows” — A Lesson About the Cycles of Prosperity and Recession — I

209 “Those Who Give Become Wealthy” — The Lesson of the Talmud Story “The Magic Pomegranate” — I

207 “Even Children Can Enjoy This” — The Story Everyone Who Wants to Become Wealthy Should Hear: “The Shipwreck and the Three Passengers” — I

If you haven’t read them yet,

after you finish this story,

I encourage you to read them as well.

They explain some of the

fundamental principles of becoming wealthy.

This story is just as important

as the three stories I introduced before.

~Why Are There So Many Successful Jewish People?~

Jewish people make up

only about 0.25% of the world’s population.

And yet—

  • It is said that Jewish people account for around 20% of Nobel Prize winners.
  • They are also consistently represented among the wealthiest people on Forbes’ billionaire rankings.

For these reasons, Jewish people are often described as having

  • exceptional intellectual ability,
  • great wealth,
  • and a high number of successful individuals.

One of the foundations of this success

is said to be the Talmud.

The stories written in this book

can be extremely insightful

for those of us living in Japan today.

So let’s learn from them together.

The story I’m introducing today

is called

“The Sparrow Wearing a Golden Crown.”

As you read this story,

ask yourself:

Could you also be a sparrow wearing a golden crown?

If you don’t want to make serious financial mistakes

and spend your life worrying about money,

I encourage you to read all the way to the end.

~One Important Note Before You Read~

Strictly speaking,

it is said that only the Talmud written in Hebrew

is regarded as the sacred text.

This is because translations into other languages

may contain mistranslations.

Therefore, for today’s story,

I will refer to Japanese books that explain the Talmud,

such as

Jewish Philosophy of Success: The Wisdom of the Talmud

and share my own interpretation of the story.

Please keep that in mind.

If you would like to study the Talmud

more accurately and in greater depth,

I recommend learning through

  • Jewish people,
  • specialists,
  • and scholarly books.

Now,

let’s get into the story.

【The Story of “The Sparrow Wearing a Golden Crown”】

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

King Solomon

was the most famous king of the Jewish people.

It is said that King Solomon would fly through the sky

on the back of an eagle,

traveling around his kingdom

and inspecting even its most distant corners.

One day,

while riding on the eagle’s back

and flying from Jerusalem toward

a distant part of his kingdom,

King Solomon suddenly became ill

and nearly fell from the eagle.

Seeing this,

hundreds of sparrows gathered around him

and supported his body

so that he would not fall from the eagle’s back.

Grateful for their help,

King Solomon said:

“I will give you sparrows anything you wish.”

The sparrows returned to their nest

and began a great debate

about what they should ask for.

Their ideas included:

A vineyard where they could always hide themselves safely

A pond where they could always drink water

Grain scattered across the fields so they would never have to worry about finding food

Then someone came up with another idea:

“Wouldn’t it be wonderful and impressive

to fly around wearing a golden crown just like King Solomon?”

All the sparrows agreed:

“Yes! That’s it!”

And their decision was made.

The representative of the sparrows

went to King Solomon and said:

“Please give us golden crowns just like yours!”

King Solomon replied:

“I don’t think that’s a very good idea.

Why don’t you think it over again?”

But the representative of the sparrows insisted:

“No. Please give all of us crowns!”

In the end,

King Solomon said,

“If that is truly what you want, then so be it.”

And he granted their wish,

giving every sparrow a golden crown.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

~Let’s Stop Here for a Moment and Think~

There is still a punchline to the story,

but before we get there,

let’s stop for a moment

and think about what has happened.

Why did King Solomon say,

“I don’t think that’s a good idea”?

It is said that in Jewish tradition,

parents sometimes read stories from the Talmud

to their children in this way,

moving the story forward while asking the children what they themselves think.

If you can figure out

why King Solomon said

“It’s not a good idea,”

then ask yourself one more question:

What should the sparrows have done instead?

Think about the story

and take it one step further

before reading the punchline.
